Weald of Kent Friendly League Finals Day
16th May 2009
Pilgrims FC ground, Challock
Wow what a day!
Starting at 0730 the helpers, too many to mention but you know who you are, started to arrive to set up the ground. Over 300 Beef Burgers, 200 sausages and 300 rashers of Bacon were collected from Richards of Charing butchers; this was equivalent to the weight of one Miles Morris. This was after many weeks of planning and shopping.
After the 3 sets of goals and respect barriers, 2 marquees, a bouncy castle and bouncy gladiators were erected we were ready. Boys from the club were already parking the parents and officials in the extended car park (many thanks to Mrs Amanda Cottrell).
The BBQ was lit and a small army of helpers were cooking bacon, making teas and coffees in the Village hall.
We were ready (only slightly behind schedule).
The Under 9s had an unscheduled semi final at 0930 between Great Chart and Wittersham finishing 2-0 to Great Chart who then had a rest before the final against Burwash.
Under 10s final between Great Chart and Smarden Patriots resulted in a 5-1 win to Smarden.
Under 9s final between Burwash and Great Chart was then a tight game resulting in a 1-1 draw. Penalties had to be taken to decide the winners which was won by Burwash 2-0.
Wittersham & Pilgrims Under 8s had an exhibition game during this time and all Under 8s players from the league were presented with a individual trophy.
Under 11s final between Pilgrims FC and Brewmasters kicked off at 12:30 and what a game.
Pilgrims played the 1st half against the wind. Benjamin taking a corner in the first half crossed to the far post providing Daniel the opportunity to score with an excellent header.
The game was tight throughout but Pilgrims were caught off guard immediately after the break letting in a goal to make it 1-1.
With the wind behind them, Pilgrims had the advantage in the second half. Benjamin scored the winning goal from 25 yards; curling from the left hand side of the pitch the ball finished in the top right hand corner of the Goal.
